Exfoliate Skin Naturally

Is there really a secret to younger looking skin? If there is, then in one word this would be it: exfoliate. And these days there are plenty of new and exciting natural exfoliants available to add to any skincare range and to give you the results you need.

Why Exfoliate?

For years exfoliation has featured as part of our fundamental beauty routine. So much so that many of us in our busy lifestyles are guilty of forgetting about this vital step as we cleanse, tone and moisturise.

However, regardless of how good our daily face creams, toners or serums are, if our skin is caked in unkempt dead skin cells, the ability of these nourishing products work and penetrate the necessary layers of skin, is hindered significantly.

Estimates vary widely, but it is believed that an adult human sheds somewhere between 12,000 to 20,000 skin cells every hour. However much of these dead skin cells remain on the surface of our skin, causing our skin's appearance to look dull, dry and at times, flakey and rough. Also the dead skin cells can interfere with the balance of oil secretion from the skin's pores, causing blemishes, spots and other skin problems.

Regular exfoliation of the skin on our body and face ensures that these dead skin cells are frequently scoured away. Once taken away, fresh, new skin cells are revealed giving the skin improved colour and tone and making it look brighter, younger, fresher and more 'alive'.

How Often Should We Exfoliate?

While we read and hear so much about exfoliating, many of us are still unsure how often we should exfoliate the skin on our face and bodies. Some people exfoliate far too often while others, not enough.

As a general rule of thumb, exfoliating the skin of your body can be done on a weekly basis, especially on those parts such as elbows, shoulders, knees, feet and backs of the hands that are frequently exposed to the elements and quickly become dry and rough.

With regard to the delicate skin on our face, neck and décolletage areas, we should only exfoliate once every one to two weeks. While exfoliating works wonders at revealing our new fresh skin, if done too often such as daily or every other day, it can actually have the reverse effect by over stimulating the skin's natural oil production. This quickly results in an increase in blemishes, pimples and even mild acne.

Above all, to see long-term improvement to the skin, exfoliating must be done regularly and on an ongoing basis.
