Description: Activated charcoal is an especially porous charcoal with extremely high absorbance capacity making it great for skin care products related to detoxing/purifying such as masks and cleansers. It adsorbs (attracts and holds) oils, toxins and impurities from the skin leaving it deeply clean and refreshed without feeling stripped or dry. These beads maintain their shape in a formula, but break to release the activated charcoal on application to the skin, providing an innovative visual effect for consumers, and easy handling for manufacturing.
Recommended for all skin types, particularly good for oily, congested skin and increasingly popular with teenage and men’s ranges. Best suited to rinse off products.
Solubility: Charcoal beads are not designed to dissolve into your formula, instead they can be suspended through a water-based product using a suitable gelling agent or can be gently mixed into an emulsion.
Use Levels: 0.5-5%
pH Stability: 6.5-8
Appearance of ingredient: Small hard black beads that will soften but not discolour your base product until skin application. On application, the softened beads will break and base will turn grey and have the visual appearance of a charcoal based product. The more beads in the formula, the more dramatic the colour change.
Formulating Guidelines: These beads require there to be some water in the formula to allow them to fully hydrate and function. It is also recommended that a suspending agent is added to any non-emulsified formula to help the beads remain suspended. A suitable example being Hydroxyethyl Cellulose. The ingredient is best added into the formula as a last step with minimal shear and cool temperatures to avoid breaking the beads prematurely.
